NASA released a digital topographic map of the best that ever existed, Monday (10/17/2011) yesterday. Map of the so-called global digital elevation model is created with an image taken by the Japanese Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument located at NASA's TERRA satellite.
Map presented in 3D, created by combining a pair of 2D images to create depth. The first version of this map has been released NASA and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan in 2009.
"Global ASTER digital elevation model has become a topographic map of the most complete and consistent in the world. With these enhancements, the resolution is held in many aspects comparable to U.S. data from NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission and able to cover a larger area," said Woody Turner , scientists involved ASTER program at NASA Headquarters, Washington.
ASTER data covering 99 percent of Earth's land area, which stretches from 83 degrees north latitude to 83 degrees south latitude.
Version of the maps that have been developed successfully added 260,000 stereo image pairs to increase the coverage area. Its features include spatial resolution have been developed, increased vertical and horizontal accuracy, coverage is more realistic in the territorial waters, as well as the ability to identify lakes whose diameter is only 1 km.
These maps are available online and accessible to anyone without charge. "Data from the maps can be applied widely, from the planning of highway construction and protection of land which has environmental and cultural values, to seek the potential of a particular nature," said Mike Abrams, ASTER leader of a team of scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
