Born in 1942 from a family of ethnic Arab Bedouin in the deserts of Libya, Gaddafi graduated from the University of Libya before becoming an army officer.
Less than a decade after taking control of the country at the age of 27, he created a system of government called the "Jamahiriya," Arabic for "the state of the masses." In theory, this system is run by a committee of the people, with Gaddafi as the title of "Leader and Guide of the Revolution." But in reality, he opposed all forms of dissent and during his reign he became the target of several assassination attempts.
Gadhafi was a strong advocate for Arab unity ideology known as Pan-Arabism, and also led the effort to unite the African countries under the Pan-African ideology.
